Whether you live in Summerlin, Spring Valley, the east side or downtown, the process is the same: there's no need to drive across the valley to a storefront. This page covers how payday loans work in Las Vegas, what they cost, the Nevada rules that apply, and the local organizations that can help if a loan isn't the right fit.

How payday loans work in Las Vegas

A payday loan is a short-term loan, generally repaid in one payment on the due date in your agreement, often around your next payday. Nevada law calls it a deferred deposit loan.

  1. Apply online

Fill out the application from your phone or computer. See loan requirements for what to have ready.

  2. Application review

The lender reviews your application, including whether you can repay, as Nevada law requires.

  3. Review your terms

If you're approved, your loan agreement shows the APR, finance charge, amount financed, total of payments and due date. You're not obligated to accept.

  4. Receive funds and repay

Funds are deposited after approval and every loan step is complete. You repay on the date in your agreement.

What a payday loan costs

Payday loans are an expensive form of credit. Your loan agreement shows the cost two ways: the finance charge, which is the dollar cost, and the APR, which is that cost as a yearly rate. Because the term is short, payday loan APRs are much higher than those of credit cards or longer-term loans. Check the finance charge against your budget before you sign: you'll need to repay the amount you borrowed plus that charge on your due date and still cover rent, utilities and groceries.

If one payment on your next payday would be hard, compare an installment loan, which spreads repayment over scheduled payments. A longer loan can still cost more in total, so compare the total of payments.

Nevada rules that protect Las Vegas borrowers

Payday lending in Las Vegas is governed by state law, NRS Chapter 604A. The key protections:

  • The original loan term can't be longer than 35 days, and any extension can't push repayment past 90 days from the start of the loan (NRS 604A.501).
  • The lender has to determine that you can repay before making the loan (NRS 604A.5011).
  • Your payday loans together can't be more than 25 percent of your expected gross monthly income (NRS 604A.5017).
  • You can cancel the loan by the close of business on the next business day (NRS 604A.5023).
  • You can pay the loan off early without an extra charge (NRS 604A.5024).
  • You may qualify for an extended payment plan of at least four payments over at least 60 days (NRS 604A.5026).
  • If you default, the lender has to offer a repayment plan before filing a lawsuit (NRS 604A.5027).
